It’s a Parrothead Party in the Motor City

So… what a weekend! In fact, it was so good its taken me a couple of days to recover and finally get back on this blog and tell you all about it.

As mentioned in my last post, we were off to a Jimmy Buffett concert this past weekend. The concert was in Detroit, Michigan and we stayed in Windsor, Ontario at Caesars Casino.  We had a blast winning then losing then winning then breaking even in the casino. However, the real reason we were there was for the Margarita party across the Detroit River! Have you ever been to a Jimmy Buffett Concert? Are you familiar with the term Parrothead?

The Urban Dictionary defines a Parrothead as follows: A Parrothead is a fan of Jimmy Buffett (there is no other meaning). The typical parrothead is pictured to wear a Hawaiian shirt, flip-flops, and other tropical attire, and to enjoy drinking margaritas on the beach.  Parrotheads often decorate their homes in tropical motifs. In general the life of a parrothead is one of relaxation and being on a permanent mental vacation even while at work.

Now I can’t say that my home is decorated in tropical motifs, but I can say that tropics are never to far away from the atmosphere we like to have and in some rooms you will definitely find an assortment of Hawaiian Lei’s. Yep I am a Parrothead and I love it!
Now one has to understand that attendance at a Jimmy Buffett Concert is more than just a night out to hear a very popular singer. In fact, it’s an all day event! Tailgating usually begins hours before the gates open up to the concert. Folks can be found sitting in their lawn chairs, BBQ’s cooking all sorts of different goodies. You will also find Tiki bars set up in parking lots and lots of Parrotheads full of cheer and having a grand ol time.  A Jimmy Buffett Concert is a real Parrothead party and for 10 hours or so of your day you feel like you’re in the tropics enjoying a great vacation. They even truck in loads of sand and set up a beach.  On this night, Jackson Browne opened up for Jimmy who then came on and played for over 2 hours straight. Not too shabby for a 66-year-old guy!
If you have never had the opportunity to attend one of Jimmy’s Concerts you have to make it happen. It’s a true experience.
